In a move to bolster border security, Thailand has completed a 1.3-kilometer segment of a permanent border fence along its boundary with Cambodia. This development comes in the wake of last year’s border clashes between the two countries, emphasizing the need for reinforced security measures.
The newly established fence in Chanthaburi province is constructed from reinforced concrete panels, further secured with steel mesh and concertina wire. Thai military officials have emphasized the durability of this structure, noting that it has been tested to withstand small-arms fire, ensuring long-term security for the border region.
Plans are underway to extend the fencing by over seven kilometers, connecting to the current section. Authorities are also evaluating additional locations along the extensive 817-kilometer Thailand-Cambodia border to determine where further fencing might be both practical and environmentally sustainable, taking into account the varying terrain.
The need for such measures remains critical given the region’s recent history. Last year, territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia escalated into two rounds of armed confrontations, involving artillery and air strikes. These conflicts led to significant casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people before ceasefire agreements were reached to halt the hostilities.
