In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng welcomed Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Hà Nội on September 5. This meeting marked Hlaing’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his role as president, where both leaders committed to enhancing the already robust bilateral relations between their nations. They pledged to broaden cooperation in various sectors, underscoring a mutual dedication to stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth in Myanmar.
President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam for its impressive socio-economic advancements and its burgeoning influence on the regional and international stage. He expressed a keen interest in drawing lessons from Vietnam’s development trajectory to benefit Myanmar. Reaffirming the enduring friendship between the two countries, Hlaing emphasized Myanmar’s resolve to maintain extensive cooperation with Vietnam, a sentiment echoed by Prime Minister Hưng.
The discussions between the two leaders highlighted recent achievements in their bilateral relations, with an agreement to bolster high-level exchanges and foster political trust. They stressed the importance of reviving crucial cooperative frameworks in areas such as trade, security, and defense. Notably, defense and security collaboration is anticipated to be a cornerstone of their partnership, with plans to tackle cross-border crime, cybercrime, and drug trafficking while enhancing military training and exchanges.
Economic collaboration was another focal point of the meeting. Both countries explored opportunities to boost trade and modernize existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation for Vietnamese investments in sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, and high-tech agriculture, among others. Additionally, they discussed initiatives to improve infrastructure and air connectivity, including the resumption of direct flights and joint tourism projects, particularly in spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam assured its continued cooperation with ASEAN members to engage constructively with Myanmar. Both leaders underscored the need for peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law. Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In turn, Hlaing invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, further cementing the ties between the two nations.
