In a significant diplomatic move, Vietnam and Denmark have elevated their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This development, announced during the state visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam to Denmark from October 19 to 21, 2026, marks a new phase in the decades-long relationship between the two nations. The timing of the announcement is notable as it coincides with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Denmark.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aims to bolster cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, defense, security, and sustainable development. This agreement builds on the foundation of their previous collaborations, namely the Comprehensive Partnership established in 2013 and the Green Strategic Partnership initiated in 2023.
Both countries have committed to expanding political dialogue and parliamentary exchanges while enhancing economic cooperation. Key areas of focus will include renewable energy, green technology, digital transformation, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and transport. Additionally, Vietnam and Denmark plan to encourage business investments, strengthen supply chains, and improve market access through existing trade agreements.
A significant component of the partnership is the shared commitment to climate action and energy efficiency, with both countries pledging to collaborate on renewable energy projects. This aligns with Vietnam’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Other areas covered in the agreement include maritime security, cybersecurity, research, vocational training, agriculture, and public health.
Vietnam and Denmark have reaffirmed their dedication to international law, multilateral cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. They expressed support for regional stability, freedom of navigation, and deeper cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
To ensure the effective implementation of the partnership, both governments will develop action plans aimed at turning their commitments into practical cooperation. This move signifies a strengthened alliance between Vietnam and Denmark, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration in various fields.
