Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing the collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The Vietnamese effort, led by Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, was noted for significantly contributing to the summit’s success by advocating for ASEAN’s central role and supporting initiatives aimed at deepening the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.

Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng headed the Vietnamese delegation, which focused on promoting dialogue and cooperation, resolving disputes peacefully, and adhering to international law. Vietnam put forward proposals to broaden collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These efforts culminated in the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, identifying energy as a key pillar of this partnership.

The summit also saw Vietnam announce its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, reflecting its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with conversations centered on expanding cooperation in areas like energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation.

Vietnam expressed optimism that the outcomes of the summit would bolster ASEAN–Russia relations, enhance regional stability, and open new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian region. By committing to these initiatives, Vietnam aims to play a crucial role in shaping the future dynamics of ASEAN and Russia’s collaborative efforts.
