A Trump administration official stated Tuesday that there are “no plans” for a meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin, despite the president’s recent claim.
Last week, after a phone call with Putin, Trump announced on social media that he would meet the Russian leader in Budapest within two weeks.
The Kremlin also distanced itself from Trump’s timeline, stating Tuesday that there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.
In an effort to organize the meeting Trump announced, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday. The call was described as “productive.”
However, the US official, speaking anonymously, said no in-person meeting between the diplomats was “necessary” and confirmed the lack of plans for a presidential meeting. This comes as Trump was also scheduled to meet Ukraine’s President Zelensky to discuss Tomahawk missiles.
