As Vietnam and Norway prepare to celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, the two nations are taking significant steps to enhance their partnership across various sectors. During a meeting in Hanoi, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål discussed strategies to deepen economic and diplomatic ties, with a particular focus on trade, renewable energy, and maritime development.
A pivotal outcome of the meeting was the advancement of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. Following 14 years of negotiations, this agreement is poised to bolster market access, foster business collaborations, and offer greater assurance to investors. Hang emphasized the importance of completing ratification procedures to facilitate the agreement’s implementation.
Both countries are also exploring the potential of their Green Strategic Partnership, signed earlier in April, which aims to support sustainable development and a transition to cleaner energy. Vietnam has encouraged increased investment from Norwegian businesses and financial institutions in areas such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture.
Norway expressed a keen interest in collaborating on marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. The two nations are looking to share technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security. This collaboration extends to regional cooperation within the ASEAN-Norway partnership from 2026 to 2030, focusing on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development.
Additionally, the discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination between their foreign ministries and mutual support in regional and international forums, including the United Nations. Both Vietnam and Norway reaffirmed their commitment to free trade, adherence to international law, and the principles of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Vietnam and Norway to expanding economic opportunities, reinforcing diplomatic relations, and promoting sustainable development, marking a significant milestone in their long-standing partnership.
