The VNREDSat-1 satellite initiative has become a cornerstone for advancing collaborations between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This partnership, which began with the satellite’s launch on May 7, 2013, is set to expand into areas such as next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Despite VNREDSat-1’s designed lifespan of five years, it continues to operate in 2026, marking 14 years of service since its official handover in September 2013.
The programme has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s expertise in satellite technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam. Through this initiative, they gained valuable skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, these engineers transitioned from relying on transferred procedures to independently addressing technical challenges, demonstrating a significant leap in capability.
Integral to the programme was the establishment of an integrated remote-sensing system. This system spans imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has been instrumental in providing nearly 30,000 satellite images, assisting in areas such as environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national defense and security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, highlighted the programme’s role in laying a technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite endeavors. However, he emphasized that achieving greater technological self-reliance necessitates advancements in satellite design, payload development, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
During French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025, a new chapter of cooperation commenced. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership aims to develop a next-generation Earth observation system and explore technological pathways for VNREDSat-2. Future collaborations will focus on increasing Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and the development of subsystems and software. This will offer opportunities to strengthen expertise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and sensor and payload development. The overarching goal is to shift from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually innovate satellite technology independently.
