Vietnam is reinforcing its strategic partnership with neighboring Laos, as emphasized by Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng during a meeting in Hanoi with Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official from the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. Hưng highlighted the importance of bolstering economic collaboration, infrastructure projects, and the execution of bilateral agreements to enhance the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

During the discussions, both parties acknowledged the substantive progress in their cooperation and stressed the necessity of converting high-level commitments into practical projects that benefit citizens in both nations. Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development, identifying potential areas for expanded cooperation such as trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism.

Amidst the talks, emphasis was placed on advancing major infrastructure projects like the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, alongside initiatives for energy connectivity. The Vietnamese prime minister also urged progress on the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University, which is part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral ties.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. The leaders stressed the importance of maintaining regular high-level exchanges and improving coordination between ministries, local authorities, and businesses. Preparations are also underway for the 2027 celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. These events aim to strengthen the historical ties and promote solidarity, especially among younger generations.

Vilay Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s ongoing support for Laos’ development goals and reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to preserving the bilateral relationship. He also underscored the importance of continuous collaboration on regional security, stability, and economic growth. Both leaders expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation would not only bolster political trust and shared development objectives but also contribute to peace and stability in the region.
