Efforts to mend the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia may face setbacks if disputes over their shared border continue to surface on international stages, Thailand has cautioned. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concerns that ongoing allegations against Thailand in global forums could hinder attempts to build trust between the two nations.
This cautionary remark came in response to statements made by Cambodia’s UN ambassador, Keo Chhea, during a United Nations Security Council meeting. Chhea highlighted the humanitarian impact of past conflicts along the border, including significant civilian displacement, destruction of property, and damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thailand, however, criticized Cambodia’s portrayal of these incidents as biased, arguing that it did not align with the spirit of a joint agreement established in late 2025. This agreement was designed to foster reconciliation and enhance confidence between the neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, the Cambodian government, through spokesperson Pen Bona, reiterated its commitment to resolving border disputes through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and respect for existing ceasefire agreements. This stance underscores Cambodia’s preference for diplomatic solutions in addressing ongoing tensions.
The historical border disputes, particularly around the Preah Vihear Temple region, have long been a source of friction between Thailand and Cambodia. These tensions have occasionally strained their bilateral relations, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
