At a recent meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam and Laos have assessed their progress on a joint cooperation plan set for 2026, with an emphasis on enhancing ties in areas such as investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. This mid-year session served as a platform for officials from both nations to evaluate achievements from the first eight months of the year and set priorities for the remaining months of 2026.
The collaboration in economic sectors has been particularly fruitful, with Vietnamese enterprises initiating 20 new investment ventures in Laos, amounting to $638.3 million, within the first seven months. Laos continues to be the prime overseas investment hub for Vietnam, hosting approximately 300 projects backed by Vietnamese investors, collectively valued at over $7 billion. The trade between the two countries has reached around $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026, reflecting a robust bilateral economic relationship.
Cooperation is also advancing in critical sectors such as energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. These developments aim to bolster the interconnectivity between Vietnam and Laos, facilitating smoother trade and investment exchanges. In addition to economic endeavors, a significant focus has been placed on education and human resource development. Vietnam has committed to providing 1,300 scholarships to Lao students this year and has earmarked $43 million in aid for Laos as part of a broader assistance program running from 2026 to 2030.
Both countries have expressed a commitment to enhancing coordination on major joint projects, addressing investment hurdles, and strengthening economic ties across the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This cooperative approach is expected to yield benefits not only for the two countries but also for the broader regional economic landscape.
