In a landmark move, Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as they commemorate half a century of diplomatic ties. This development signifies a major stride in enhancing political, economic, and technological collaboration between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The upgraded partnership was announced during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand. The visit saw the signing of four pivotal agreements spanning areas such as economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development. These agreements are set to foster deeper ties and bolster mutual interests across crucial sectors.
A key outcome of the discussions was the adoption of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026–2031. This plan aims to broaden cooperation in various fields, with a particular focus on security and defense. Both countries pledged to intensify efforts in combating transnational crimes, including online scams and illegal fishing, while also seeking to strengthen economic coordination to counter global economic challenges and stimulate private-sector growth.
Economic collaboration remains a top priority, with leaders from both countries expressing their ambition to boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately $22.1 billion, to $24 billion in the foreseeable future. The partnership also underscores the importance of technology and innovation, with plans to collaborate on satellite technology, semiconductors, agricultural biotechnology, and other emerging industries. Furthermore, initiatives to enhance supply-chain integration, local economic connectivity, and green energy cooperation are expected to augment regional competitiveness and ensure energy security.
President Tô Lâm reaffirmed Vietnam’s dedication to fortifying ties with Thailand and emphasized the shared commitment to fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southeast Asia. This strengthened partnership is poised to contribute significantly to the region’s prosperity and resilience amid evolving global dynamics.
