The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has established a crucial platform for enhanced collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This partnership is anticipated to advance towards next-generation satellite development, technology transfer, and training, ultimately bolstering Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, was launched on May 7, 2013, and officially began operations in September 2013. Despite having an initial lifespan of five years, the satellite continues to function in 2026, entering its 14th year of service.
Through the VNREDSat-1 program, Vietnam has not only achieved proficiency in satellite operations but has also developed expertise in various technical domains. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, gaining valuable insights into system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, these engineers have transitioned from relying on transferred procedures to independently addressing technical challenges, showcasing their growing competence.
Additionally, Vietnam has established an integrated remote-sensing system that encompasses the full spectrum of satellite operations, from imaging requests to data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting a wide range of activities, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of the program in laying a technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite initiatives. However, he also noted that achieving technological self-reliance would necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, and ground systems, among other areas.
A new chapter in Vietnam-France space cooperation began during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The collaboration aims to explore options for a next-generation Earth observation system and the proposed VNREDSat-2. Future efforts are expected to emphasize greater Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, software development, and data applications. This strategy seeks to transition Vietnam from purchasing satellite systems to participating in co-development and mastering satellite technology, enabling local scientists and engineers to design and operate future satellite generations independently.
