Vietnam and Switzerland have taken significant steps to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership, with a strong emphasis on trade, investment, scientific research, and sustainable development. This development follows the official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, which coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the visit, leaders from both countries reiterated their commitment to strengthening political dialogue and economic ties. They highlighted the importance of collaboration through international institutions and discussed expanding exchanges among government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations.
A notable outcome of these discussions was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland as a member. This agreement aims to enhance market access and facilitate business expansion, presenting opportunities for increased trade and investment once it is implemented.
Vietnam and Switzerland are working towards boosting bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and are encouraging greater Swiss investment in Vietnam. The focus will be on priority sectors such as green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development. Additionally, opportunities for joint research and technology transfer in fields like biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy have been identified to support innovation and the commercialization of research.
Education is another area of focus, with Vietnam planning to enhance educational partnerships and exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. Both countries have reaffirmed their support for sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order.
The strengthened partnership between Vietnam and Switzerland is expected to foster economic growth and contribute to regional and global stability, underlining both nations’ commitment to collaborative progress in areas of mutual interest.
