In an effort to enhance bilateral ties, Thailand’s Anutin Charnvirakul and France’s Emmanuel Macron have agreed to elevate their nations’ relationship to a strategic partnership. The discussions, held at the Élysée Palace in Paris, centered on boosting collaboration in key sectors such as trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. The talks also emphasized the importance of regional developments in Cambodia and Myanmar.
Both countries have committed to expanding their cooperation in industries including alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France has reiterated its support for the swift conclusion of negotiations concerning the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement, which both parties aim to finalize this year. Launched initially in 2013, these trade talks were paused in 2014 and resumed in 2023, with Thai officials expressing optimism about the economic opportunities that could result from the agreement.
Defense and cybersecurity are also areas where Thailand and France plan to strengthen their partnership. This includes collaborative efforts to tackle cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On another front, Thailand has reaffirmed its dedication to resolving border issues with Cambodia peacefully, adhering to international law frameworks.
To solidify this evolving relationship, both governments have announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028. This plan is seen as a foundation for a formal strategic partnership between the two nations. Meanwhile, Anutin’s visit to France also included meetings with executives from major French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, aiming to attract further investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech industries.
There is a growing confidence among French businesses regarding Thailand’s investment climate, highlighted by Airbus’s announcement of plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations in the country. These developments mark a significant step forward in the economic and strategic relations between Thailand and France, promising mutual benefits in various sectors.
