As Thailand makes strides toward a sustainable energy future, the country has seen a dramatic increase in solar panel imports. Data from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department reveals that imports surged by 88.7% to reach US$426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026. Central to this development is China, which accounts for a staggering 99.3% of these imports.
Chinese solar panels alone contributed US$423.9 million to Thailand’s import figures, marking a significant 107.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, other regional suppliers such as Singapore and Hong Kong played only minor roles, each providing approximately 0.3% of the total import value.
This spike in imports coincides with Thailand’s ambitious plans to roll out a household solar installation program. The initiative aims to subsidize solar installations for up to one million households with potential expansion to 1.5 million homes. The program promises financial incentives of around THB50,000 per household, encouraging the adoption of both rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems.
In tandem with these efforts, the Thai government is exploring strategies to bolster domestic solar manufacturing capacity. This includes collaborations with the Ministry of Labour to train workers in solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Additionally, discussions with the Board of Investment focus on reducing duties for production inputs that are not locally available, further supporting the domestic solar industry.
Through these initiatives, Thailand aims not only to lower electricity costs for households but also to foster the development of a robust clean-energy supply chain. As the nation shifts towards renewable energy, these efforts are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable energy future.
