At the commemorative summit celebrating 35 years of dialogue between ASEAN and Russia, Vietnam underscored its pivotal role in advancing cooperation between the two entities. The summit saw significant contributions from Vietnam, which aimed to reinforce ASEAN’s central position and support the deepening of its strategic partnership with Russia, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation, which focused on promoting dialogue, peaceful dispute resolution, and respect for international law. In its efforts to foster collaboration, Vietnam proposed initiatives to enhance cooperation in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These initiatives aligned with the summit’s adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a key pillar of their partnership.
In a move demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to regional cooperation, the country announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative reflects Vietnam’s forward-looking approach to fostering future cooperation between ASEAN and Russia. Furthermore, on the sidelines of the main summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, discussing opportunities for expanded cooperation in energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam has expressed optimism that the outcomes of the summit will enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to regional stability and opening up new avenues for economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia. The emphasis on energy as a cornerstone of the partnership highlights the strategic importance of this sector in the evolving relationship between ASEAN and Russia.
